
St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery
Originally built in 1108-1113 by Sviatopolk II, the grandson of Yaroslav the Wise
The monastery starts with Mykhailivska square with the ministry of foreign affairs behind it

The bell tower was built in 1716-1720 in Cossack Baroque style
This monument is dedicated to victims of Holodomor, also known as the Terror-Famine. It was a great famine conducted by the soviet regime in 1932-33, that killed millions on Ukrainians. It let the soviet government suppress the resistance of Ukrainian peasantry to obey the regime. Another goal was to gain some extra finances through selling excessive amounts of Ukrainian crops abroad, leaving local peasantry with no food to survive
“Religion is poison, keep kids away from it”
In 1920-30s soviet regime conducted a severe suppression against any religious organisations on its lands. Religious systems considered as a barrier for building a progressive and efficient society. Methods of suppression included temple distraction, mass executions of clerics
In 1934-36 the whole monastery was destroyed by soviet regime in frames of its fight with religions
In 1998 the whole monastery complex was restored
In 2014, during the revolution in Ukraine, the monastery gave shelter and protection to the protesters hiding from the government violence
